Accessibility at BookGeist

We want BookGeist to be usable by as many readers as possible. We design the app with legibility, contrast, motion, assisted navigation, and different ways of perceiving information in mind.
This page describes BookGeist’s current accessibility features and limitations.
Available features
Dark interface
BookGeist offers dark themes that can remain active throughout the app’s everyday tasks. It can also follow the light or dark appearance configured on your device.
Dark themes are designed to reduce large bright areas and make reading more comfortable in low-light environments.
Increased contrast
The app uses palettes designed to maintain legible separation between text, icons, controls, and backgrounds.
In supported themes, you can also enable Increase contrast, which raises the contrast of text and borders.
Information beyond color
BookGeist does not rely on color alone to communicate important states. Where appropriate, selections, notices, errors, and actions are accompanied by text, icons, shapes, or other visual changes.
This helps make the interface understandable when certain colors are difficult to distinguish.
Reduce motion
BookGeist detects the iOS Reduce Motion setting and adapts or removes animations that could cause discomfort or distraction.
You can also enable this preference directly from:

Compatibility and limitations
VoiceOver and Voice Control
Many screens and controls include accessible labels, roles, states, and actions. We have also added alternatives for interactions such as long presses, adjustable controls, charts, and modal windows.
VoiceOver and Voice Control are available across many screens, although we do not guarantee full compatibility for every task.
Larger Text
BookGeist lets you enlarge text through your device settings and offers text sizes within the app.
Text can be enlarged, although some dense screens may have limitations at larger sizes. We do not claim full compatibility with Apple’s Larger Text feature.
Audiovisual content
BookGeist does not use videos with dialogue or narrative audiovisual content as an essential part of its features. Captions and audio descriptions are therefore not applicable.

From there, you can change text size, reduce motion, extend notification duration, and make some alternatives to long-press interactions visible.
Themes and contrast are configured under:
Settings → Personalization → Appearance
This website
The BookGeist marketing website (bookgeist.app) is a separate product from the iOS app, but built with the same commitment. It targets WCAG 2.2 Level AA and includes:
- Semantic HTML and landmark regions (header, navigation, main content, footer) for screen reader navigation.
- Full keyboard navigation, with a visible focus indicator on every interactive element, including on dark backgrounds.
- A “Skip to content” link at the top of every page for keyboard and screen reader users.
- Respect for your device’s Reduce Motion preference — animations and transitions are minimized or removed accordingly.
- No reliance on color alone to convey information — states, comparisons, and form errors are also described in text.
- Self-hosted fonts, so text remains legible even if a third-party resource fails to load.
